The Surrey Youth Trials Club made a return to Brackendene for the first round of The Chris Norman Shield, after early morning rain the conditions were slippery for the twenty-five riders. Clerk of the course Steve Moore had introduced some new variations to the eight sections which were ridden five times in a clockwise direction around the disused ornamental gardens utilising the banks, rockery and rubble piles.

There was a three-way tie for first place in the Beginners class between six-year-old George Campling, seven-year-old Josh Lunt and eight-year-old Zach Johnston who all lost five marks, ten-year-old Charlie Smith was a dab behind in fourth with twelve-year-old Fred Maltby another dab off in fifth place. First timers Caleb Pierson and Jake Smith rode very well to finish their first trials with creditable scores. Section one caused most of them a problem with the tight turns around the trees in and out of the whoops, Charlie did best and managed five clean rides, Zach lost most of his marks on the slippery stream banks of section five.

Five riders managed to ride the entire Novice route without penalty, eight-year-olds Harry Hawyes and Ryan Wiffen shared the win with twelve-year-olds Riley Maryon, Blake Myles and Leon Barron. Thirteen-year-old Ella Barron lost a solitary dab over the rubble pile at section two but it meant she finished sixth, eleven-year-old Ella Chappell-Smith lost all her five marks on those slippery banks at section five. Seasoned performers Theo Percy, Codie Yates, Euan Chappell-Smith, Ivan Large and Bradley Sims battled hard for top-ten finishes, whereas little four-year-old Tommy Wakeford did well to finish his first trial. Both Jack Myles and Ella Cashman suffered machine problems and their scores suffered because of this.

Fourteen-year-old Samuel Meeten rode his big wheel Oset perfectly for victory in the Support Class managing to ride the entire course without penalty, he was followed home by nine-year-old Kai Fisher who lost all his ten marks in the tight turns of section one.

The second round of the club’s Chris Norman Novice & Beginner Shield will be held on Saturday 12th June at Kitsmead, Longcross with kickstart time at 2pm, new members and spectators are now welcome; for further details contact Eddie Renham 01784 452225.
